Advance copies of the Japanese Goth book have arrived. It’s always a little sad when a project I’ve been working on for so long draws to a close. There is also a tinge of anxiety while opening up the box of books because it is like finally meeting someone after a prolonged correspondence. I’m never entirely sure just what first impressions will be, especially since the book begins as a germ of an idea in the mind’s eye and through a near-magical process became a physical reality.
I’m pleased to say I was most satisfied with the finished product. Its smooth, glossy cover, the weight in the hand, and the scope of material we’ve covered is handsome and the printing came out marvelous. Even though I am always involved with the art direction of the books and projects, it’s been a while since I’ve done book design and layout entirely on my own. Luckily, working with Tiffany provided ample stimulus and a reliable sounding board for ideas. It was great to be involved in that creative process that blurs the lines between editor, author, and designer to find an organic wholeness to the project.
Now we’re looking forward to the online promotion and feedback from readers.
